Africa2Moon Out of this World and Into the Next | A keynote by Dr Adriana Marais
This keynote shares the journey of Africa’s first mission to the Moon from the perspective of the Foundation for Space Development Africa.
It highlights the vision of African space exploration, beginning with early inspirations, the challenges of projects like Mars One, and the innovative “BALLS” lunar telescope concept designed for low-frequency radio astronomy on the Moon’s far side. Through collaboration with international partners and local experts, the team overcame technical, financial, and logistical challenges to secure participation in the Chinese Chunga 8 mission, aiming to place the first African radio telescope at the lunar south pole.
The story emphasizes how passion, collaboration, and resourcefulness can open pathways for African scientists, engineers, and young dreamers to engage with space exploration.
