The Opportunity
The Problem
Africa is being left behind in the space age.
For the first time in 4 billion years, humanity is expanding beyond our home planet. Permanent bases are planned for the Moon this decade as a gateway to Mars and beyond. A space economy approaching a trillion dollars underpins global connectivity, positioning, timing, financial transactions, transportation, and communication. Earth observation satellites provide the data for climate science, resource management, and environmental protection.
Yet Africa, home to nearly 20% of the global population, owns less than 1% of satellites in orbit. By 2030, nearly half of global youth will be African. Despite this demographic reality and the establishment of over a dozen national space agencies across the continent, including the African Space Agency in 2023, Africa has had no official participation in decades of international human spaceflight programmes and has led no space exploration mission to date.
The consequences are severe:
Economic Loss
Dependence on foreign countries for critical satellite data and services limits economic sovereignty and growth potential.
Reduced Resilience
Weaker climate and disaster preparedness impacts agriculture and food security across the continent.
Technological Dependency
As a perpetual customer of space innovation, Africa experiences slower STEM development and persistent brain drain of talented scientists and engineers.
Limited Sovereignty
Reduced influence in global space policy creation and dependency in communications and security.
Without the infrastructure, expertise, and participation to shape space technology development, Africa cannot fully address critical challenges in climate adaptation, food security, disaster response, digital inclusion, or economic development. Playing only a minor role in space holds back the continent's growth, resilience, and participation in global development.
The Solution
The Foundation for Space Development Africa bridges this gap through a strategic framework built on four interconnected pillars designed to create a self-sustaining ecosystem for innovation and growth.
Science
Novel contributions to scientific knowledge, enhanced research capabilities, African and global research collaborations
Innovation
New high-tech industries and jobs, local technology ecosystems, solutions for societal challenges
Education
Space science education for millions, STEM graduate training programmes, reduced brain drain
Infrastructure
Digital inclusion and data access, sustainable revenue generation, enhanced disaster response
Eight Transformative Programmes
FSDA drives change through eight strategic programmes that span space-based technologies, ground-based infrastructure, research, and education.
What We've Already Achieved
R1.4 Billion
Secured through in-kind partnerships, covering Africa2Moon development, mission selection, and initial flight hardware design and manufacturing.
April 2025
Africa2Moon selected as international payload for China's Chang'e-8 mission, scheduled to launch to the lunar south pole in 2029.
8 Partner Countries
Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, and Zambia participating in continent-wide infrastructure programs.
Strategic Partnerships Across the Continent
FSDA demonstrates the power of collaboration through partnerships with China's International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) partner network, the Chinese National Space Administration (CNSA), South African National Space Agency (SANSA), South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences (NITheCS), and a growing network of government, academic, and industry organisations across Africa.
The pilot colocation site at the Kuntunse radio telescope in Ghana successfully integrates scientific research with commercial data services, demonstrating the viability of our innovative revenue-generating infrastructure model.
We're not starting from zero. We're building on proven success.
What We Need From You
To execute our strategic plan and bring these transformative initiatives to fruition, FSDA seeks R291 million in funding over the next five years (2026-2031).
This investment will be allocated across our core operational needs and eight strategic programmes, designed to ensure successful execution of our flagship missions while building long-term infrastructure and capacity for sustainable growth.
Investment Opportunities
FSDA welcomes partnerships across multiple structures:
Programme Sponsorship
Direct support for specific programmes aligned with your organization's mission and values. Customizable partnership packages available.
Infrastructure Investment
Support for revenue-generating colocation sites and data infrastructure that create sustainable operational funding while advancing scientific research.
Capacity Building
Fund scholarships, training programmes, and research opportunities that develop the next generation of African space scientists and engineers.
What You Get Out of It
Your investment delivers a powerful return across multiple dimensions, creating measurable impact that extends far beyond traditional financial metrics.
Your Legacy
Partner with FSDA and be part of the generation that transformed Africa from minor participant to global pioneer in space.
In 2029, when Africa2Moon deploys on the lunar surface, your organization's support will be part of that historic achievement. When African astronauts train for missions beyond Earth, your investment made that possible. When millions of African students explore the Solar System through real mission data, they're using platforms you helped create.
This is your opportunity to shape Africa's future and humanity's expansion beyond Earth.
